The FA Vase draw took us to Wellingborough Whitworth yesterday for a very enjoyable day. One of the nice things about this competition is that it takes you to new places, and Whitworth proved a very enjoyable place to visit – a lovely club with nice people and a fantastic playing surface that was so good it could have been Wembley itself.

The lads got off to a flying start in this game, creating a number of very early chances and not giving the home team any time to settle. The keeper was forced into a fine save from George after 4mins and it looked like only a matter of time before we scored. On 8mins a clever diagonal ball put Sheps in and he went around the keeper and, having been pushed out to a narrow angle, applied a great finish for very good goal.
With the home team still trying to play their way into the game, we struck again on 11mins when Jack applied a very deft flick to a cross from Frankie - a very clever finish. Tring continued to pour forward, playing some lovely passing football. The Whitworth keeper made a number of fine saves as we created chance after chance. However, there was nothing he could do on 26mns when a looping header from Jack drifted over him and into the back of the net. So 0 – 3 up and could so easily have been more.

With Whitworth starting to gather their composure and starting to play some football of their own, it looked like they would make it to the break without any further damage. Frankie had other idea’s however and found space to drive a shot low into the net from an angle.
0 – 4 at half time and we looked well worth the lead. What a first half that was!

The lads came out for the second half and started with great energy, creating chances and forcing great saves from the excellent Whitworth keeper from Max, Sheps and Dylan. It was looking like we would be certain to add to our score but, to their credit, Whitworth dug in and started to create their own chances - including one that required a goal line clearance.

The game then fell into a scrappy phase with both teams cancelling out the other in midfield. There were further good passages of play and further excellent chances, but we were unable to reach the heights of the first half. The game came to stuttering conclusion with no further goals.

This was and important win in this prestigious competition and takes us into the hat for the next round. A sublime first half performance saw us take total control which we never looked like relinquishing. Well done to the lads on a great performance and result.

A final word about our hosts who showed us great hospitality and were an absolute pleasure to visit. We wish them all the best for the remainder of the season.
