FIRST HALF GOALS SEE US THROUGH TO NEXT ROUND OF CUP

We were again in Cup action at the Grass Roots Stadium on Tuesday night but this time the lights stayed on!! Our opponents were close neighbours Berkhamsted Raiders who play in Division 2 of the South Midlands League who came into the game on the back of a thumping 6-1 win over Buckingham United 3 days earlier. This much anticipated cup tie was the first ever meeting between our 2 clubs.

The St Mary’s Cup has been running since 1888 and it holds a special place in the affections of long standing Athletic supporters because it was the first senior cup we ever won and it set us on a run of success that saw us collect many more trophies. In total we have lifted this cup on 7 occasions the last time being in 2017.

We made a few changes from Saturday and we also brought on 4 youngsters in the second half which included Dan Payne, Charlie Beeton and Joey Kibabu who were all making their First Team debut. The 4th youngster was Bogdan Marian who scored 4 goals the previous night for the U18’s.

We manged to get our noses in front with goals two minutes apart mid-way through the first half. The first came from a corner expertly taken by Frankie Hercules in the 20th minute which Godlove Oppong flicked home at the near post with a deft header. Score 1-0. Two minutes later Davide Pobbe made a great run and then found Godlove Oppong who nicely set up Frankie Hercules to score. Score 2-0. Just before the half hour mark Davide Pobbe thought he had scored after the keeper Ryan Parker made a super save from Godlove but it was ruled out for offside.

Our guests had started the game well having had the first shot on target and winning the first corner of the game and despite the early set back they played some lovely football. In the 37th minute they produced a lovely move involving the lively Keiran Bernard-White and the former Athletic player Luke Cestrone with a dangerous cross that was deflected wide. From the resulting corner Ollie Burchnall shot over the bar.
After the break the visitors carried on where they left off producing some nicely flowing football but without greatly troubling Oscar Frost in our goal. We took the opportunity to blood in some youngsters and with our defence holding firm there were few scoring opportunities in the second half. The nearest our opponents came to a goal was right on time when a good shot forced Oscar Frost to tip the ball wide for a corner.

A good game of football which our opponents greatly contributed to and we wish them all the best for the rest of the season.

After the game Eli Hearn was awarded the Man of Match which was a fitting tribute because the youngster has been outstanding this season.

Our main focus will now be the replay of the FA Vase game at Walsall Wood on Saturday.
